Overall Description:

Attention Colorado counselors and counselors-in training! Join us for a professional development course to learn the answers to the frequently-asked question,“what is engineering?”, as well as learn about the creative engineering innovations that impact our lives. Through presentations by engineering faculty and students from various engineering departments, you will learn about the demographics of who does—and does not—typically access the engineering pipeline, and gain knowledge on more effective engineering messaging to help broaden participation for diverse students. Through a hands-on engineering design activity, counselors simulate the learning experienced by engineering students as they cement the types of skills useful for an engineering career. The course, while not only showcasing the state-of-the-art facilities at CU-Boulder, provides counselors with a common language to appropriately inform students of engineering as a possible career choice.

Logistics:

Dates: Friday, May 31, 2013

Time: 8:00 am-3:00 pm

Location: The Discovery Learning Center, College of Engineering and Applied Science, CU-Boulder

Stipend: Counselors will receive a small stipend to offset travel costs

Additional Travel: For counselors traveling long distances over 180 miles, we have a few travel grants to cover one night in a local hotel.

This workshop earns you one half hour of Continuing Education credit.

Finer details:

The counselors will learn about “What is Engineering?” and the wide range of engineering innovations that are underway at CU Boulder

They will learn about the demographics of who does — and does not — typically access the engineering pipeline, and learn about the National Academy of Engineering’s Changing the Conversation study to be able to more effective engineering messaging that help broaden participation with diverse students.

They will have the opportunity to hear from, and ask questions of, engineering faculty and students in a variety of engineering departments, during a networking session.

They will engage in a fun hands-on engineering design activity, (similar to what their students would do) to demonstrate the types of skills useful for an engineering career.

Lastly, they will tour engineering programs such as the Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory and the BOLD Center.

And we will provide a compilation of resource material, highlighting different degree programs in engineering and marketing engineering for middle and high-school students, for them to take home.
